Since it has been raining all week her in NYC and my iPhone died on me I thought I could pass the time to answer a few questions.
This is me thinking at my work desk, took a bit of thinking to get these answers.
Describe your style in your own words!
How do I put this, every day I wake up I feel like I need to try something different. I can’t put one name on my style because every day is different. It can be preppy one day to grunge, to girly, to modern, to retro etc…
What's your philosophy when it comes to fashion?
Wear what you want to make you feel better. Don’t let other people tell you what you need to wear by their judgments. If you feel great in an article of clothing then wear it. Also try something new because you never know what might work for you.
How did you decide to start your blog? What impact would you say that it's had on your life?
I had started a personal lifestyle blog with Diys and my crafts, but then I started putting what I wore on it and I realized I needed to make a separate blog just for fashion.
If you could live anywhere in the world and work as anything you wanted to – where and what would it be?
NYC, and not because I was born and live here, but because of what the city has to offer. NYC for me is the fashion capital of the world, the street style is amazing. Plus I love all the different cultures that makes up NYC. NYC is a city you can never get bored with because there is always something for everyone and there is always something new going on.
How important is fashion and style to you? What is it about fashion that intrigues you?
While fashion is not important as living and breathing, but it has similar effects. Style influences a big part of my life in everything I do. From waking up and getting dressed but the car I drive and even sometimes the food I eat.
Fashion is always changing and going through cycles, style from the past is always brought back and repeated. I always love that some styles are melded together to make something new. Fashion is like the spice in the jar of life, for example we bring spices from around the world to make food have life, fashion from around the world is brought together for the same purpose.
What's it like living in NYC? How long have you lived there and what would you say is the best/worst part about living there?
Living in NYC is great, as I said before I love everything that the city is from culture to style to activities. There isn’t much that is bad about the city except for fashion wise there are so many people here that it is hard to standout and be unique.
If you could change one thing about the fashion industry, what would it be?
Size does matter, I would love for each manufacturer to make sizes be universal like a size 10 is a size 10 in every store and every label. It’s hard to be a size 10 in one store and an 16 in another while being an 8 in another.
What is your first/earliest fashion memory?
It maybe earlier than this but playing dress up in my mom’s clothes is one thing I can remember. My mom also use to make a lot of my clothing so I always remember being fitted for the things she made as she was sew or knitting the garments.
Describe your wardrobe! (Not the place itself, but what’s in it!) :) Which one is your favourite piece?
If you look through my closet the first thing you will notice is that I have a lot of shoes that are mostly black. I love shoes and for me black is universal because it matches everything. But I am trying to break that mold and add a few colors to my shoes.
As for my actual clothes I do have color, I especially love jewel tones since they tend to complement my blue eyes and pale skin. But I also have pastels, muted colors and basics thrown in here and there. I also have a lot of prints from floral to abstract to animal.
Label aren’t important as how certain piece feel to me is. I shop at Target, H&M, Express, Forever 21, and Charlotte Russe. But I also shop vintage and my Mom’s closet so there are a few designer labels in the mix as well.
Cant say I have a favorite piece, but I did just get this Christian Dior blouse that I love so much from my Mom's closet. I love it so much I made a pattern from it and plan to make it in different colors and fabrics.
What did you look like, growing up? Did you try a lot of different styles? When would you say that you found your own, personal style?
Under the age of 10 I was a very pretty girl, I actually used to be a model and my Mom’s friends always wanted me as a flower girl or to pose for paintings. But then I grew up and the cuteness got awkward and my body got odd shaped so now I am just average.
As a teenager I always experimented with thrifted clothes and random pieces that I could afford in stores. My mom always took me to Goodwill and other thrift store where I could get me a lot of pieces for very little money. My prom dress was actually from Goodwill.
But I never fell into a mold as far as fashion was concerned, while the other kids around me were preppy I wore grunge and when they wore grunge I went to retro etc… I got made fun of but I didn’t really care because I had one other friend who was like me and it just gave us more of a reason not to dress like them.
When you were a kid, what did you want to become when you grew up? Why?
I wanted to become an Opera singer, I actually use to sing very well and sang in front of my school for recitals and plays.
I also wanted to be single with a live-in boyfriend with no children in a career that allowed me to travel.
What were you like in high school?
Non-conformist.
I always did the opposite of what the other kids did. I was a big city kid in a small town school with small minded people. I hung out with the kids who were poor and kids with money because it didn’t matter to me. I also hung out with non-whites when it was frowned upon. (I am a white looking non-white who grew up in NYC which is a big mixed raced community) To me it didn’t matter where a person grew up or how they grew up I chose friends based on their personality qualities. It still bothers me to this day about social class and race separations to this day at that school.
But I did make some good close friends who are still my friends to this day.
What do you know now wish that you knew when you were 14?
I should have taken advantage of my body, I was skinny as a rail and was able to pull off a lot of clothing that I can’t now. Also I wish I could have experimented with my clothing more, I wish I would have worn more dresses and skirts.
Looking back, what's the very best thing that ever happened to you? And what would you rather wish you had never had to experience?
Moving back to NYC, I was born here but I moved away to NC from the ages of 11-18 and I always felt out of place there so I was always awkward. I missed NYC so when I moved back I felt comfortable with myself here.
If I lost my parents and no to play favorites but especially my Mom, I don’t know what I would do. I didn’t have a great relationship, if at all, with her growing up, due to some circumstances, but I am making up for it now.
What are your plans - or dreams - for the future?
I do plan to go back to school so I can get into a career that is best suited for my potential. I would also love to start my own accessories line that is for people and home decorating.
What's your family like?
Determined. Both my parents grew up poor, my Father in the Projects in Brooklyn and my Mother in Chile, both very determined to get out of their situation and have a life where they could be fulfilled. My father always knew he wanted to be a FDNY firefighter and my Mom always wanted to come to the US so both worked very hard to accomplish their goals.
I don’t know much about my Mother’s side of the family but I know that my paternal grandmother was blind but never let her disability stop her from accomplishing anything. She was an accomplished pianist
she took care of herself and her children, traveled throughout the city with just her dog. She also was a leader in getting accessibility improvements for people with disabilities (not just blind) by meeting with US Presidents, Mayors, Senators, and Governors.
What is your biggest regret?
Letting doubt be a deterrent in not allowing me to accomplish goals I had set for myself.
What does a regular day in your life look like?
During the week I wake up in the morning at 5:30, start work at 7:00, work until 3:30 go home and if I have somewhere to be in the city I change clothes and head out. If I don’t have to go out I change my clothes anyway and maybe get a photo shoot in then I go back to the house and cook dinner, after dinner I try to write up my blog. If I haven’t done a photo shoot I am usually working on jewelry or read a book or catching a show on TV. Then it’s bedtime around 10:30pm.
How would you describe yourself to someone who knows nothing about you?
Loyal, creative, organized. That’s what I always hear.
What would you say is the biggest misconception that people who don't know you have about you?
That I grew up privileged. That’s how I was raised to feel that, but I didn’t. I was never spoiled by my parents; they made me earn everything that I wanted or needed. They provided me with a roof over my head and food for my belly but I had to earn my keep. But my parents made me feel that everything I had earned was like being privileged as if I never needed anything. Whenever I tried something it was on my own and I am thankful for it to this day.
All those things make me keep my head up and the thought in my head that I am better for that. Sometimes comes off the wrong way to people but it keeps me from doing something foolish or immature.
What is your best quality, according to you? What is the worst?
My loyalty for my friends – they know that they can count on me for anything. The worst thing is my doubt
What specific moment in your life do you believe has been most important in turning you into the person you are today?
Can’t say just one moment but many moments as a whole, but some moments were good and others were bad
